Kids May Not Need Supplements for Strong Bones

For kids with healthy bones, taking vitamin D supplements won't boost bone density. That's the finding of a recent research review, in which scientists analyzed six studies with a total of 884 participants.

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, a major building block for bones. But while taking vitamin D supplements may improve bone density in children with low vitamin D levels, the supplements don't appear to benefit kids with normal levels of the so-called sunshine vitamin.

As people age, however, taking vitamin D supplements may be an important step in protecting against osteoporosis (a common condition marked by loss of bone). Indeed, many studies show that increasing intake of vitamin D and calcium can reduce risk of bone loss among older adults. Since it can be difficult to maintain sufficient vitamin D levels solely through diet and sunlight exposure, it may be best for adults to up their vitamin D levels by taking a daily supplement.
