Acupuncture May Not Aid Stroke Patients
Acupuncture may offer no benefit to people who have suffered stroke, a recent research review shows.
For the review, scientists sized up 10 studies (with a total of 711 patients) on acupuncture and stroke recovery. According to the study's authors, the majority of existing studies do not suggest that acupuncture is effective when used for stroke rehabilitation. Although two studies found that acupuncture produced a positive effect, both studies had flaws that rendered them unreliable.
Findings from a few small studies indicate that acupuncture may help improve balance, treat chronic hemiparesis (weakness on one side of the body), and relieve spastic dyskinesia (difficulty in performing voluntary movements) among people who have experienced a stroke. However, since there is very little scientific support for acupuncture's effectiveness in stroke recovery, it's crucial for stroke patients to consult their physicians about using acupuncture for stroke recovery.
